DO RE ME FA SO LA TE DO...and so on...

Been a while since I've had reliable wireless so I haven't posted my photos of Salzburg.   The city was great.   Weather was warm and mostly sunny.  We had two full days in Salzburg.   The first full day we started the day taking another incline railway up to see the Hohensalzburg Fortress.  Quite an imposing site that you can see from anywhere in town.   There is practically a town within it's walls and there probably was a real town inside it's walls back in the day.  But today there are a couple of museums, a church, a few restaurants and an art summer school.  We took a tour of the fortress and saw a small (extremely small) marionette museum.  Then we enjoyed a very nice lunch with a beautiful view and, more importantly, a breeze!

THAT IS THE FORTRESS UP ON THE HILL.   NO THAT IS NOT A REAL PERSON ON THE TOP OF THE GOLD BALL...THE BEST ANSWER I COULD GET IS "IT'S ART".

THE FORTRESS -UP CLOSE.

A SMALL MARIONETTE MUSEUM IN THE FORTRESS.  THESE ARE FROM THE EARLY 1900s

THESE ARE FROM THE 1940s

INTERESTING DISPLAY OF ARMOUR

THESE ARE SOME ORIGINAL WINDOWS THAT WERE FOUND DURING THE LAST RENOVATION IN 1998.

COMFY CHAIR FOR WATCHING THE GAME......MIDIEVAL STYLE.

SO IF YOU FILL THESE UP WITH GRAIN, HOW CAN YOU EVEN LIFT IT UP TO USE IT?   I COULDN'T LIFE THEM UP EMPTY!

ARCHBISHOP LEONHARD VON KEUTSCHACH BUILT THESE EXTRAVAGANT ROOMS ON THE 3RD FLOOR IN 1498 FOR GREETING DIGNITARIES.  HIS PRIVATE LIVING QUARTERS WERE ON THE 2ND FLOOR.

EVEN THE ARCHBISHOP HAS TO GO!!  VERY MODERN AND SANITARY FOR THE DAY.

THIS IS A VERY ORNATE HEATER.

THIS WAS EXCAVATED DURING THE 1998 RENOVATION.   THEY THINK IT IS A FURNACE TYPE ROOM.  THEY WOULD BURN WOOD IN ONE CHAMBER AND THEN THEY WOULD HAVE THE HEAT BLOWN INTO THE UPPER FLOORS...BY MAN-POWER I'M SURE.
CHAPEL OF THE ARCHBISHOP

LUNCH AT THE FORTRESS.  THE KIDS LOVED WIENER SCHNITZEL!!

YES - I SHAVED MY GOTEE

We left the nice breeze on top of the fortress and went back to Salzburg to walk around and enjoy the scenery.  We made our way over the Salzach River and a little further found Mirabell Gardens.  Of course this one of the places that was filmed for The Sound of Music!

SALZBURG CATHEDRAL

SALZBERG CATHEDRAL

THERE WERE SEATS FOR THE SALZBURG MUSIC FESTIVAL.  THERE WAS ANOTHER AREA SET UP WITH A HUGE SCREEN AND THEY WOULD SHOW CONCERTS IN THE EVENING EITHER LIVE OR PRE-RECORDED.

ALL I CAN THINK OF IS THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE MUST GET "AUSTRIA" MIXED UP WITH "AUSTRALIA".  REALLY??

ST. PETER'S ABBEY

ST. PETER'S CHURCH AND CEMETERY.
I DID NOT REALIZE UNTIL TOO LATE IN THE DAY THAT BEHIND ST. PETER'S IS ST. PETER'S CATACOMBS WHICH YOU CAN TOUR.

OKAY - THIS IS GOING TO SOUND WEIRD BUT I WAS A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED HERE;  I KIND OF EXPECTED TO SEE GRAVE MARKERS WITH DATES OF 1157 OR 1248.  INSTEAD IT WAS 1999, 2006, 1987;  HOWEVER, I DID FIND OUT THAT MOZART'S SISTER IS BURIED SOMEWHERE IN THIS CEMETERY.  GUESS SHE WAS IN BETTER SHAPE FINANCIALLY THAN HER BROTHER.

SHOPPING IN SALZBURG

CHURCH OF ST. BLASIUS

LOVE FOREVER LOCKED ON BRIDGES THROUGHOUT EUROPE

MIRABELL GARDENS

DO I HEAR MARIA AND THE CHILDREN SINGING?

And just a few more of these cool signs like I had found in Innsbruck.   Must be an Austrian thing.

Well - that's all from the town of Salzburg.   We have one more day here but we won't be back in town except for dinner.
